Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when dozens of them floated into the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become not financially viable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
