The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.
Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank
The decision to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed typically studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the count of new jobs added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.
The number of positions created to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.
Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release when the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are going up, although slowly. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
