Britain and America have reached a landmark trade agreement that will keep no levies on British drug products going into the US market.

Key Provisions of the Accord

Under the terms of the agreement, the UK has committed to raise expenditure on pharmaceuticals through the public health system. This pledge ensures that import taxes on these vital products will remain at zero for a period of the next three years.

This deal follows previous threats to dramatically increase import taxes on patented drug imports, with potential rates discussed up to 100%.

"This arrangement between the UK strengthens the global environment for new treatments and brings much-needed equity to American-British drug exports," a statement said.

Trade Importance

Drugs represent one of the Britain's biggest exports to the US, which is by far the biggest destination for large UK drugmakers.

Statistics reveal that in the one-year period leading up to September, the UK shipped pharmaceutical products worth billions to the US. This value represented a significant portion of total UK exports in that timeframe.

"This agreement secures work, stimulates capital expenditure and sets the stage for the UK to become a global hub for life sciences," a government official commented.

Detailed British Pledges

The agreement includes several notable commitments from the United Kingdom:

  • Revised Affordability Limit: The UK will raise the price threshold at which it judges new therapies to be unaffordable by 25%.
  • Boosted Medicine Funding: There is a goal to increase total health service expenditure on treatments from 0.3 percent of GDP to 0.6% over the next decade.
  • Refund Ceiling: The amount drug companies must return to the NHS to control costs will be limited at 15%. Previously, repayments exceeded twenty percent.

Recent Tensions

The pact follows a protracted row between the drug companies and the UK government over drug pricing and approval rates.

This friction were intensified by assertions that American consumers were paying significantly more for the same drugs than patients in the UK and Europe.

Recently, several major pharmaceutical investments in the UK have been delayed or cancelled, while major expansions have been announced toward projects in the United States.

One official stated that the NHS had to invest a greater share on drugs, noting that its spending on drugs had shrunk as a proportion of its total funding over the previous ten-year period.
